The Descent and Creep

The Descent and Creep
The setting of the caves used in the descent fits in the horror genre due to its dark and lonely presence with the feeling of being trapped forever. This is a great setting for a horror  film due to the the involvement of the audience to the film as well as the character. This is because of the lack of what the character can see in the movie is also all the audience can see, therefore giving the audience a sense of terror as they feel trapped down the cave along side the creatures with the characters. The Creep's setting is in a London underground which also gives off the same fear as the caves in the Descent because it gives the audience that fear of the unknown. It also gives the audience a sense of reality as they may go the the underground every day. This fits in with the horror genre as most horrors try to give that realist feel such a serial killer stabbing its next victim leaving the audience frightened that it could happen to them which gains a much better response from the reactions of the audience.

Characters in the horror movies typically feature a 'Final Girl' who is a virgin and ends up killing the antagonist (the killer). However the Descent and Creep does not feature a final girl in the movies but they do have a girl protagonist who last's until the end. Kate (Creep) and Sarah ( The Descent) both last until the end but can not be classed as 'Final Girls' because they are not virgins. However it could be argued that Sarah is due to the loss of her husband and daughter, but this is not the case and can not be considered as a typical 'final girl'. The antagonists ( the villain) in both Creep and The Descent are both shown as monstrous through there body features for example pale skin that looks deformed which is evident in both Creeps and the Descents monster. The body moment of the villains also gives a monstrous feel with there performance and the way they move, with spider-like movements and posture. The sound that is made in both of the films of the villains also give a unnatural and monstrous feel with screeching noises and cricket-like croaks.

Key iconography used in creep was that the killer used a knife which is typical in the horror genre. The descent also used a overuse of blood which can bee seen as iconic to the genre. However this is very limited both of these films typically go against all the horror 'rules' leaving it hard to pick out on key iconography for example the knife used by the killer in creep is not a typical knife and more of a spear. They also don't have any masks on they are both just monstrous creatures in both the Descent and Creep.

There are key horror themes in both of these movies for example the theme of entrapment which is used in both films with the caves and the underground. The theme of revenge is also key in both films with Sarah getting back at Juno for sleeping with her husband and Kate killing the monster who killed her friends. The theme of hope is also shown in creep where she survivals all that she went through and same with the descent where she sees the tunnel that leads to the way out.

EXPAND YOUR MIND!

Expand your mind: The Best Filmmaker’s TED Talks In this article it reviews speeches provided by these film makers about there ideology on film making and there personal reminiscences through the world of Hollywood. It also points across about how revolutionary these film makers are towards today's cinema and movie making. It discusses how they have had a massive impact on cinema and the certain individual aspects that they have brought in to film making.

Firstly they discuss Andrew Stanton's heart warming movies such as "finding Nemo" and "Wall-E". The article then begins to discuss on his views upon emotional story telling and how it is a key milestone in the creation of a good film. I found it interesting that hes believes that for a good film to work a story has to make "you care about the characters". This appealed to me as believe this is also a true factor in the art of film.

They then go on to talk about JJ Abrams and how cinema has significantly changed in the last ten years. A quote that interested me was “Ten years ago to get that shot we’d have had to kill a stuntman.” This fascinated me because it shows how much technology has developed and how even more realistic when can make films without anybody getting hurt.

My most interesting part of this article was where James Cameron discuses why he got into film making and how his ideas for his most greatest films came about. He also talks about how he always wanted to be a scoober diver as a kid and how his passion for scoober diving linked into his creation of "The Abyss". James Cameron also points out that his reason for making science fiction movies is due to his curiosity of the natural world. Another fascinating fact her stated was when he spoke about the only reason for him wanting to make the "Titanic" was simply due to the fact that he wanted to to visit the wreck. I really enjoyed when he was talking about this simply because Titanic is seen as one of the most greatest films and most disturbing and interesting topics in history but his only reason for making it was a humerus one.
